Big Yell

Sporting the famous orange scarves and looking just the picture of UT pride, Texas Spirits came out to DKR-Memorial Stadium to show their enthusiasm for a new school year at the sixth annual Big Yell, presented by the Texas Exes Spirits and Traditions Council.

Big Yell gives new students a chance to learn UT’s most beloved traditions, songs and cheers and serves as a rallying point to get the entire student body pumped up for the new football season. The Longhorn Band also known as the “Show band of the Southwest” and a great source of pride for UT, helped pump up the excited crowd from the field.  The girls were able to hear the stories behind long standing school traditions such as Smokey the Cannon, the Hook ‘Em Horns hand sign, “The Eyes of Texas,” and Bevo’s name. Mack Brown was also there, answering questions from students and of course, talking football. This year’s Big Yell was the biggest one yet, and Spirits will be sure to be present, as in past years, in years to come to strengthen this relatively new Texas tradition.

Big Yell reminds students that, in the words of Mack Brown, “The team is only as good as your fans,” and “To have the best team in the country, you have to have the best fans in the country.” And Big Yell was definitely a great start to a great year for the team and fans alike.
