Spirits Abroad Over the Summer
With the last week of classes coming up, Texas Spirits are enjoying some of our last moments together before many of us part ways for the summer. This summer, we are proud to announce that young women will be representing Texas Spirits all over the world, from coast to coast and on five continents. Though we will be in different time zones, we are happy that we are all only a click away from each other through the Facebook Actives page. Over the summer we will be featuring different Spirits, where they are, and what they're doing, so stay tuned!

Weenie of the Week: Laurel Lunsford
Name: Laurel Lunsford
Hometown: Lake Jackson, TX
Major: Studio Art and Advertising
What's your favorite memory from Weenie semester?
Favorite memory for this semester would be at Weenie Roast when we git over 20 girls in a 5 person tent and in the midst of Hannah Ivancie telling ghost stories to us the fire we thought we had put out sprang back to life and scared all of us half to death haha. Thankfully Mama Marilyn saved the day.
If you could be a bar of soap in anyone's shower, whose would you pick?
It'd be Aaron Tveit's bar of soap any day.
What's your favorite place in Austin and why?
My favorite place in Austin at the moment would probably be Cafe Crepe downtown. I love my food and their crepes are delicious, and how can you beat a cute little Austin cafe?
What advice would you give a new Weenie?
Breathe! Through the experience can be a little overwhelming and at time stressful, just remember that it's one of the most fun semesters you'll have thus far. Take time to actually enjoy it and save the stress for later. It all works out much easier than you think it will!
Congratulations, Laurel! CIWY
Spirit of the Week: Morgan Riley
Name: Morgan Riley
Hometown: Dayton, TX
Major: Corporate Communications
Weenie Class: Fall 2010
What's your favorite memory in Spirits?
It's cliche but definitely the day I finally got that burnt orange scarf. It tok all semester but it was so worth it!
If you could be a bar of soap in anyone's shower, whose would you pick?
Ryan Gosling's obviously, no explanation needed.
What's your favorite place in Austin and why?
My favorite place in Austin would have to be Hopdoddy. Their burgers are to die for.
What advice would you give a new Weenie?
My advice for a new Weenie would be to never do blind dates for date events, you'll end up leaving them at the bar or going home with somebody like I've done haha! ;)
Congratulations, Morgan! CIWY
Spring 2013 Initiation Brunch
With the end of the semester wrapping up, students are studying, the sun is coming out, and Weenies are getting their scarves! After a night full of secrets, rituals, and tradition, Weenies become official members of Texas Spirits. The next morning Actives, JIs, and Weenies alike all wake up early for Initiation Brunch.
Served buffet style at the Iron Cactus, there's nothing not to like about Initiation Brunch. With dozens of different foods to choose from, everyone finds something they love. With loaded plates and tables filled with girls, the festivities begin!
The Weenies start off by performing skits imitating all the members of the Ghost Council. The impersonations of Hook 'Em Haunt Emily Lamon this semester were spot on! The Weenies had all the Actives cracking up at their interpretations of the personalities of each Ghost Council member.
Next, awards are announced to honor those Spirits who truly went above and beyond this semester. Congratulations to the following Spirits and thank you for all that you do!
Golden Bucket - Laurel Lunsford
Weenie Social Butterfly - Maria Benson
Active Social Butterfly - Carly Colville

Initiation Brunch is one of the happiest events that Spirits puts on each semester full of spirit, service, friendship, and love.
Congratulations to all of the Spring 2013 Weenies!
Texas Spirits partners with Food Recovery Network to stop food waste at UT Austin
By Leah Spector
Americans throw away about $165 billion worth of food each year - yes, billion. For the average family, that's $2,000 per household, per year, of wasted money and resources. When you think about hunger in America, which one in six suffers from in this country, food waste seems like a careless and irresponsible problem.
That's why Texas Spirits decided to do something about it. This semester, we've joined forces with the UT Austin chapter of Food Recovery Network, a national organization of seven universities that work to recover wasted food and donate it to those in need. FRN is based on the principle that food already exists to solve hunger - we just have to save it and donate it.
FRN volunteers pick up extra food from campus restaurants and cafes that would have otherwise been thrown out. They then deliver that food to surrounding churches and shelters that have dining programs for those in need. Pounds of nutritious an wholesome food are recovered so many people can eat that day, and the whole process only takes about an hour. Since 2011, Food Recovery Network has donated 136, 284 pounds of food.
When Spring 2010 Weenie Jenna Fahle approached Spirits about the partnering with FRN, Ghost Council and Service Haunts Anjali Sethi and Doha Hussien knew it would match well with Spirits' goal of reaching the community in a direct and meaningful way.
"Hunger is a very big issue in our state, as hidden as it may seem. I believe the best way to fight hunger is to bring awareness and education to the public on food insecurity and systemic problems in our society," said Jenna Fahle, a senior nutrition major. "I'm interested in food injustice, so I decided to get involved. FRN is unique because the organization makes a big local impact empowering businesses the means to give back to the Austin community. FRN's partners really rely on our help. The club revolves around serving the University, so it aligns with Spirits' core of serving."

Food Recovery Network Founder and Director of Operations Parker McCorkle said the Texas Spirits' involvement is in fact making a difference on campus and throughout the Austin community.
"Texas Spirits have tackled our largest source of food waste, picking up 50 to 125 pounds from O's Cafe every Friday, and they have been picking up food from this location since FRN partnered with them in February," said McCorkle. "They then transport that food to University United Methodist Church nearby. The church feeds the homeless the following Saturday morning with the food the Spirits dropped off, so FRN knows their work is meaningful. Texas Spirits volunteers have proved reliable and cheerful in their work with us."

Pancakes for Parkinson's
The Texas Spirits are proud to work with the Texas Round Table as the Public Relations chairs for UT's annual Pancakes for Parkinson's event on April 24, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Gregory Plaza. Come out and join us!
Pancakes for Parkinson's was founded in 2004. Since then these student-driven events, held on a number of university campuses across the nation, have raised $250,000 to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Our aim at UT is to raise public awareness and to educate people about Parkinson's disease, which strikes 1 person in 100 over the age of 60; while raising money to support the Michael J. Fox Foundation which is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today.
UT students are proud to honor longtime faculty member and former VP of Student Affairs, Dr. James Vick and pledge that 100% of the donations raised during this event will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to further its goals.
Join us for a day full of pancakes, door prizes, and special Guest Flippers. Who knows? Maybe your favorite professor, athlete, or administrator may be joining us for pancakes too!

Midnight Drag Wars
Every semester the Texas Spirits divide up into teams based on pledge classes and compete in the ultimate drag paint competition - MIDNIGHT DRAG WARS! At midnight on the night of April 14th, Spirits grabbed their paint and brushes and hit the drag. Each group of girls, excited by the competitive fun, worked together to turn out the ultimate advertisement for UT athletic events and the University's Relay for Life on their assigned window of the numerous businesses on the drag. All of the windows this year turned out fabulous, but the Weenies had really come to play! They took home first prize in the contest for their beautiful Relay for Life display on the window of the University Federal Credit Union.

Relay for Life
On Saturday, April 20, 2013, hundreds of college kids came together under the University Tower to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer. The Texas Spirits and Iron Spikes teamed up for a night of cakewalks, coffee, and late night Zumba. Ceremonies throughout the night helped the participants commemorate those who have been touched by cancer in their lives. It was a beautiful event shared by those who are determined to eradicate cancer for good.

Texas Spirits and Tejas Club Slip and Slide
On Friday, April 19, Weenies, JIs, and Actives alike retreated the the Tejas house for a fun day in the sun with the handsome boys of The Tejas Club. Despire the chilly weather, the afternoon was spent sliding down a huge inflatable water slide, playing in the lawn, and swinging on the old Tejas porch swings. As it does every year, Tejas Slip and Slide provided tons of fun and laughter for both organizations.
Weenie of the Week: Hannah Ivancie
Name: Hannah Ivancie
Hometown: Denver, CO
Major: Undeclared (but hopefully Architecture!)
What's one thing a lot of people don't know about you?
I've played the violin for almost 13 years and I really love music.
Give me three words that describe you.
Sassy. Adventurous. Silly.
If you were a dog, what kind would you be and why?
I would be a Corgie because I think their big ears represent how I love to listen to what people have to say and hear their stories. Also I love to laugh and they always look like they are smiling! Plus, I think it's kind of funny how they have wicked short legs in proportion to their body and my legs are abnormally long!
What is your favorite part about being a Weenie?
I love the fact that everything is new and unexpected. Whether it be the new people that I get to meet at events, mixers, meetings, drag paint, or the fun little traditions of being a Weenie, every day something new happens. Being a very adventurous person, I love the thought of not knowing what comes next!
Congratulations, Hannah! CIWY
Spirit of the Week: Kaitlin Evans
Name: Kaitlin Evans
Hometown: Waynesville, OH
Major: Biology/Pre-Med
Weenie Class: Fall 2012
What's one thing a lot of people don't know about you?
I have thirteen pillows and five blankets on my bed. I like to be comfy.
Give me three words that describe you.
Awkward. Bonquisha. Vivacious.
If you were a dog, what kind would you be and why?
Chocolate lab, because they're active and playful, but love naps and cuddles, just like me!
What's your favorite part of Spirits?
I love the bond I have formed with girls that will last a lifetime. These are girls that I can call for anything at any time of the day or night.
Congratulations, Kaitlin! CIWY

Senior Weenie Potluck
The Senior Weenie Potluck was a spectacular success! Jenna and Sierra generously offered thier home for the event, where there was a table piled high with every kind of food from dessert to hummus to dessert to pizza...to dessert. The Weenies left a glowing and mature first impression by heading immediately towards the trampoline in the backyard. Ingredients for s'mores were laid out and both Weenies and Seniors mingled around the campfire, talking and roasting marshmallows. The Seniors had some wonderful advice for the Weenies' futures in the organization and even though they will be leaving us soon, they left a lasting impression on the youngest class.

Bob Pee's with Tejas
Despite the dreary weather that preceded the event, the
weather could not have been more perfect for The Tejas Club’s “2013th
annual Bob Pees” event. On Friday, April 5th, students, visitors,
and alumni flocked to the Tejas house for delicious boiled crawfish, lawn
croquet, and dance-worthy music provided by North
Loop. The party began at two, and by three o’clock the property was
bustling with girls in white dresses and boys in white tees. Playing in the
sweet sunshine of springtime is always fun, but what’s better than getting to
wear white game-day dresses again? Nothing. Well, nothing except the sight of
this adorable pup kissing this little girl. (Future Texas Spirit? Time will
tell.)

Destination Unknown 2013: Sea World
The ladies of Texas Spirits woke up bright and early last Saturday morning to meet at a set location in West Campus with bags and coolers in hand, but only the Special Haunts, Sierra and Ashley, knew where they were headed! Spirits were told to pack swim suits, towels, and a change of clothes, but the rest of the day was a mystery. After loading the bus, they headed south down I35 towards San Antonio. After about two hours on the bus, Spirits finally arrived at the mysterious destination - Sea World! After eating lunch, the ladies of Texas Spirits and their dates were able to explore the theme park. Some headed straight for the roller coasters while others were ready to watch the shows. Some even got to feed the dolphins! After a fun day out in the sun, everyone got in their "snappy casual" outfits and loaded back onto the bus. This time the bus headed back towards Austin. A pitstop was made just outside of Austin at an event hall that was completely reserved for Spirits. The event hall was decorated in red and black in true Spirits fashion, and fajitas were being served. Music was blaring from the moment Spirits walked through the door, so the dance floor in the middle of the room wasn't empty for long! After dinner was done, the dance floor filled up and a line was formed at the photo backdrop. Shortly after, Spirits and their dates hopped back on the bus and headed into Austin. Everyone was given a little while to get ready, and then they could make their way downtown to the bar 512. The night ended strong with everyone dancing the night away and enjoying such wonderful company downtown. Sierra and Ashley did a spectacular job putting together such a great Destination Unknown! No one can wait to see what else they have in store!

Zilker Garden Festival
Texas Spirits teamed up to promote education and love of gardening at this year's 56th Zilker Garden Festival. The festival was held at Zilker Botanical Gardens, which attracts half a million people from around the world yearly.
The festival offered an annual Flower Show, where horticultural specimens were judged for a little friendly competition. There were also several "Gardening Talks" where novice and seasoned gardeners enjoyed talks from local gardeners. In addition there was also live music from the Soundstage in Rose Garden. However, the event was not just targeted to adults. The colorful and fun Kid's Corner offered many different crafts and activities to delight the younger audience in attendance.
Texas Spirits were sprinkled around the nearly 30 acres helping in any way possible. From face painting in Kid's Corner to admitting guests into the festival, there were many diverse volunteer opportunities available.

Micah 6 LIVE
The Micah 6 food pantry has one goal - for us to work together as a city to identify and meet the needs of the homeless and impoverished in the Austin area. What began in 2004 as a simple food pantry has grown to so much more today. In 2010, Micah 6 reported over 19,000 recipient shopping trips. Texas Spirits has been volunteering at Micah 6 since the spring of 2011. The food pantry is open on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Volunteers generally help set up the shopping area, break down boxes, collect paper work, bag groceries, help shoppers, and much more.
On Sunday, April 21, University Avenue Church of Christ and University Christian Church are putting on an event called "Live." The event's proceeds and all the money raised will benefit Micah 6 Austin. Families and kids of all ages are invited to attend this multimedia experience.

Weenie of the Week: Paige Kroll
Name: Paige Kroll
Hometown: Austin, TX
Major: Public Relations
First off, why Texas Spirits? What made you want to apply?
I am a sucker for tradition. I love being involved in an organization with so much history. Texas Spirits has been around long enough to build a great reputation with the school and the community. After thoroughly stalking the website and talking to older friends, I knew it was the group for me! I love how each Spirit is unique and brings something different to the organization. I feel so fortunate to have been chosen as a Weenie.
What is your favorite part about being a Weenie?
I love spending time with my Weenie sisters! I am so obsessed with them already. (AND MY GHOULFAM <3) Being a Weenie has brought me amazing friendships, and I can't wait to see them grow.
Tell us one thing we may not know about you.
I can bawwwk like a chicken...really well.
What is your favorite TV show and why?
GILMORE GIRLS. GILMORE GIRLS. GILMORE GIRLS. I wish I was Rory. This show is the best because it's absolutely hilarious. The characters are so witty! I have watched all 7 seasons like 5 times.
Any exciting plans for the summer?
I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!! (My favorite place on Earth) After that, I am taking a couple classes at ACC and working at a dance studio!
Congratulations, Paige! CIWY
Spirit of the Week: Lauren Berrong
Name: Lauren Berrong
Hometown: Keller, TX
Major: Elementary Education
Weenie Class: Fall 2012
So of all the spirit groups, why Texas Spirits? What made you want to apply?
I chose Spirits above all other groups because of the awesome girls that I met! Everyone is so genuine and diverse! As an education major, I am constantly around girls that I'm pretty similar to, so being in Spirits has given me the opportunity to create relationships with people I probably never would've met otherwise. I mean, how often do education majors get to socialize with biomedical engineering majors?
Tell us your favorite memory as a Weenie.
My all-time favorite Weenie memory would have to be Tap In. I had never felt so much excitement and love from a group of strangers in my entire life. Tap In is such a great way to get you fired up for your time in Spirits.
Where do you see yourself in seven years?
I'm not quite sure where I see myself in seven years. I'm trying not to worry too much about the future just yet. I hope to be teaching at an elementary school by then though! Preferably second grade or younger!
If you could somehow go back in time and give advice to your high school self, what would you say?
Trust your intuition. Make time for others. And always be grateful.
Any fun plans for the summer?
After visiting my family for a few weeks, I'm going to be staying around Austin to knock out my last three classes before starting my internship/student teaching sequence in the fall. I'm also going to be working part time at my current job. Nothing too terribly exciting, I suppose. Yay for being an adult!
Congratulations, Lauren! CIWY

Forty Acres Fest
This past Saturday, The University of Texas hosted its annual event, Forty Acres Fest. Texas Spirits painted faces and handed out baked goods, all while raising money for Make-A-Wish Foundation and Saint Louise House. Along with the lovely Texas Spirits, Forty Acres Fest showcased live music, other organizations, and fun games too! Texas Spirits had a booth next to the Texas Iron Spikes who sold fajitas to benefit their philanthropy as well. Thankfully the boys let us share their tent to keep us cooler on a warm, sunny, spring day in Texas. Another highlight of the day was when a Spirits alumnae's boyfriend, Ben Baxter, and his band preformed on stage. Spirits spent the day dancing, painting, and making people smile, like we always do! Forty Acres Fest is always one of our favorite events and it was just as enjoyable this year. Texas Spirits spent a beautiful day on campus at the school we all love. Hook 'em and CIWY.

Texas Men's Soccer vs. UTSA
This past Saturday, Texas Spirits supported UT Men's Soccer in a phenomenal game against UTSA. As soon as the game started, the horns dominated. Less than one minute into the game, the longhorns had scored a goal, setting the tone for the rest of the game and sending the Spirits into an uproar of cheers. The amazing performance continued and the longhorns won the game with a score of 2-0. It was a great way to spend our Saturday.
The Men's Soccer Club will be playing another game this Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Whitaker Fields.
Weenie of the Week: Gabby Garza
Name: Gabby Garza
Hometown: Royse City, TX
Major: Government and Political Communications
Why did you decide to join Texas Spirits?
I decided to join Spirits because it's a diverse group of girls who always seemed to be having so much fun together, and also because Maggie Widodo is my LLA Director and talked Spirits up quite a bit.
Describe yourself in three words.
I guess describing myself in three words would be classy, driven, and houndstooth-addict.
What's a unique talent you have?
I can quote Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids verbatim throughout the whole movie.
What's your favorite place in Austin and why?
My favorite place in Austin, not Mt. Bonnell, not Barton Springs, but Hopdoddy :) Because it is the happiest place in the world...even more than Disney World.
What's your favorite memory as a Weenie?
My favorite memory of my Weenie semester so far was probably Weenie Roast, even though it was freezing outside. It was our first opportunity to really get to know one another, and it makes for great stories.
Congratulations, Gabby! CIWY
Spirit of the Week: Caitlin O'Brien
Name: Caitlin O'Brien
Hometown: Houston, TX
Major: Nursing
Weenie Class: Fall 2011
Why did you decide to join Texas Spirits?
I decided to join Spirits to get involved at UT and to meet new people. However, I had no idea that I would meet my best friends and make so many awesome memories. Spirits is so much more than an ordinary organization on campus. It represents the university and has the most genuine and sweet girls. I'm so glad I decided to join Spirits because my college experience wouldn't have been the same!
Describe yourself in three words.
Creative, easygoing, and kind
What's a unique talent you have?
I can paint with both my left and right hand. I'm better with my right hand, but I think it's fun to do both! My dad is an artist and he taught me when I was little. I have been painting ever since!
What's your favorite place in Austin and why?
Zilker Park!! It has one of the best views of the city and is dog friendly. Also, the best events go on at Zilker...like ACL, Blues on the Green, and the Trail of Lights. It's also a relaxing spot to take a break from school or catch up with friends.
What's your favorite memory as a Spirit?
Weenie semester initiation. I can't say much about it, except that Fall 2011 is the best!
Congratulations, Caitlin! CIWY

10,000 Roses
Ever wondered what the white roses are that everyone is carrying around campus that one random day each year? The roses are coming from the 10,000 Roses event that is put on every year by the White Rose Society. The White Rose Society is a UT Holocaust remembrance organization that raises genocide awareness. The 10,000 white roses that are passed our university wide symbolize the amount of people that were killed in Auschwitz during the Holocaust.
This year Texas Spirits and other UT organizations gathered together in the University Catholic Center to de-thorn the 10,000 roses and attach a small message for the recipient. The center was filled with a wonderful rose aroma and the roses themselves were as gorgeous as could be. As the storm brewed outside and the rain came down we worked hard and completed a 4 hours task in 2 hours. The next day more Texas Spirits took camp at random places throughout the UT campus to distribute roses to those passing by.
This was a truly wonderful event and Texas Spirits were honored to be able to help make 10,000 roses a success.

Round Up 2013
Neon, Koozies, Crawfish - the three essentials of Round Up. I used to think that Round Up and all its beauty had an age limit, but ladies and gentlemen I'm here to tell you that it does not. There is Round Up joy to be had for everyone. Whether it's just grabbin' margs at Cuatros in your comfortable Neon attire before heading to Sigma Chi to see a great show or chilling at a Sammy late night. I mean when else can you party in oversized tees and wind shorts and call it "cute"? This semester Texas Spirits co-hosted a crawfish boil with Absolute Texxas and I swear to you I have never had more fun in my entire life. Or better crawfish for that matter. So this is my public service announcement to thank everyone who was there and everyone who helped put that together. And I sincerely hope that this new tradition lives on.
See you babes next year. XoXo.
