Spirit of the Week: Alyssa Pappas

Name: Alyssa Pappas
Hometown: Spring Branch, TX
Major: HDFS Early Childhood
Weenie Class: Spring 2013

What is your favorite Texas Spirits memory so far?
My favorite Spirits memory is of my Tap In last semester. That's where the traditions really hit home for me and I realized what an amazing organization I had the honor of being a part of.

What is your favorite place in Austin and why?
My perfect little Hyde Park neighborhood. I'm obsessed with my house (and roommates, hi, Ashley Dowell) and nothing beats having a place you can call home, especially when it's in the perfect Austin location!

What are three words that describe you?
Energy, perfectionist, caring.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Definitely still in the Austin area, and definitely working with kids!

What advice do you have for new Weeenies?
This is your chance to get to know girls that you probably wouldn't have met otherwise, so use the opportunity to build yourself as a person. Texas Spirits has widened my capacity for all around love for others and I've tried so many new things I wouldn't have tried otherwise!

Congratulations, Alyssa! CIWY

Spirit of the Week: Sheena Mohebalian

Name: Sheena Mohebalian
Hometown: Friendswood, TX
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Weenie Class: Fall 2012

What is your favorite Spirits memory so far?
My Weenie Roast camping trip as one of my favorite Spirits memories. Is there anything better than roasting some Weenies with my favorite Weenies?

If you could be a bar of soap in anyone's shower, whose would you choose?
John Legend. That man has the voice of an angel.

What is your favorite place in Austin and why?
The Burrito Factory in Dobie. That place is a hidden gem. Their burritos are on point.

What advice would you give the prospective girls trying out right now?
I would advise the prospective girls to try to meet as many Actives and other prospectives as possible. It's such a great way to get to know new people! And you never know, some of the girls you meet might be in your Fall 2013 Weenie class!

Congratulations, Sheena! CIWY

Prospective Service Project: Making Cards For St. Louise House

This morning Texas Spirits gathered to make cards for St. Louise House. We invited all of our prospective members to come and help out! We spent time getting to know one another and creating "Welcome Home" cards for the families who will be staying at St. Louise House this fall. We were lucky enough to have two representatives from St. Louise House come out and tell our prospective members about all the fun events Texas Spirits and St. Louise House put on. At the end, we presented the St. Louise House representatives with over 50 cards to distribute to their residents!

Spirit of the Week: Savannah Hampton

Name: Savannah Hampton
Hometown: San Antonio, TX
Major: Human Biology
Weenie Class: Fall 2012

What's your favorite Texas Spirits memory?
My favorite Texas Spirits memory is my Weenie O'ahu. It's right after you spend the night bonding with your new Weenie sisters and you get to celebrate being a Spirit with them. It was just so exciting to have people I didn't even know congratulating me and it made me totally stoked for my years ahead in Spirits and UT.

What's your favorite place in Austin and why?
My favorite place in Austin is the southwest corner of 26th and Rio. That is where Mighty Cone is and I'm obsessed with the avocado taco. I've been craving one for the past two months.

What are three words that describe you?
Detail-oriented. Loyal. Dreamer.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
God willing, I'll be in medical school.

What advice do you have for girls trying out for Spirits?
Be yourself and put yourself out there! Stay till the end of things when most people have already left; it's easier to converse that way!

Congratulations, Savannah! CIWY

First Reception Feedback

First Reception for the fall 2013 semester was a HUGE success!!! Over 275 girls attended our event to learn about Texas Spirits and our application process. With only 25 spots available for fall 2013 Weenies, the competition is going to be on this semester. We encourage girls to be themselves, show us their creativity, and earn that scarf! Good luck with your applications, girls!

Fall 2013 Recruitment Video

Special thanks to Aly Kasberg for creating this amazing video displaying what Texas Spirits is!

Invitation From The Chief Haunt

Hi everyone!

My name is Tori Kazmierski and I am the Chief Haunt, or President, of Texas Spirits. It is my utmost pleasure to invite you to our First Reception today, Wednesday September 4th, at 5 pm in the SAC Ballroom. We will talk more about what Texas Spirits does on campus and in the community, as well as our 70 years of tradition. Our Vice Haunt, Nicole Martinez, will distribute the application, cover the details of the application process, and then answer any questions that you may have.

Immediately following First Reception we have two Starbucks Socials - one at the Starbucks on 24th and the other at the Starbucks in the SAC. We will be at each Starbucks from about 6 pm until 8 pm with extra applications so if you are unable to make it to First Reception you may pick up an application at that time. You will also be able to mix and mingle with Spirits and have all of your questions answered.

If you are unable to make it to First Reception of a Starbucks Social, the application will be available online tomorrow evening. However, we strongly encourage you to try to make it to one of our events, even if only for a moment, so that we can go over the application with you and have a chance to meet you.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, as we are more than happy to help. I am so excited to meet you all tomorrow!

CIWY,
Tori

Texas Spirits' Biannual Pluckers Meet & Greet

Today marks the official start of fall recruitment with Texas Spirits' biannual Pluckers Meet & Greet. This tradition has been around for as long as most Actives can remember. Arriving at Pluckers and see all the other girls interested in Texas Spirits motivates potential Weenies to step up their A game during recruitment. Our only piece of advice for recruitment is be yourself. That's how we all got into Texas Spirits and that's how you'll get in too!

Come join us tonight at Pluckers on Rio from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm to meet some Texas Spirits! Feel free to stay the whole time or stop by and say hello.

We've been waiting for y'all all summer and are super excited to get to know each and every one of you!

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year - Football Season!

Yesterday kicked off The University of Texas football season! For many of us who have been waiting for months, it felt as exciting as Christmas morning. Texas Spirits could be found all across the Forty Acres. From collecting money for The Make-A-Wish Foundation to face painting at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center to tailgating at the Bob Bullock Museum, Texas Spirits spent the entire day showing their school spirit. Their cheering in the student section helped lead the Texas Longhorns to a victory against New Mexico State University. Check out pictures from game day here!
