Spirit of the Week: Katy Wainwright

Hometown: Euless, Texas
Major: American Studies.
Weenie Class: Fall 11

What does Texas Spirits mean to you?
Texas Spirits means to me an endless amount of love and friendship between every single member. I am so humbled by all of the talented girls that make up our organization, and am so honored to be a part of an organization where everyone genuinely cares about each other!
You have just opened a restaurant. What is the name, and what is the signature food?
Not too sure if this counts as a restaurant, but I would open a cake ball bakery and name it Amaze Balls. The signature flavor would, of course, be red velvet (because there is DEFINITELY a difference between red velvet and chocolate, I'm convinced).
If you had to pick a Disney movie to live in, what would it be and why?
Because I have seen it recently, I would love to live in the movie Frozen because the scenery is beautiful! But I would also have to have Elsa's powers because I am a wimp when it comes to the cold weather!
Who do you look up to the most in Spirits and why?
Easy: Erin Crandall. Not only is Erin one of my very best friends, but she is the most passionate, loving, and bubbly person I know. There is nothing she wouldn't do for anyone, and she embodies everything a Texas Spirit should be!

Spirit of the Week: Anjali Sethi

Hometown: Allen, TX
Major: Honors Human Development and Family Science/Pre-med
Weenie Class: Spring 12

What Does Texas Spirits Mean to you? Texas Spirits is my home away from home. It’s where I found my best friends, my future bridesmaids, and where I found myself. These women inspire me on a daily basis and make me want to be a better person. These are the women that constantly push me to strive for more and cheer me on along the way. Texas Spirits has changed my life for the better and I wouldn’t be who I am today without this beautiful family!

If you could change one thing about your weenie semester what would it be and why? Weenie semester was the best!! I honestly can’t imagine changing anything except adding more sleepovers and adventures because I can never have enough time with my Spring 12 girls!! (Spring 12 forever <3) But if I had to change something it’d be actually waking up for those 7 A.M. meetings on time so that I wasn’t always sprinting to the SAC… oh the struggle was so real.

What is your favorite restaurant in Austin and what do you usually order? I am obsessed with food and Austin is the perfect place to explore new noms <3 Currently I’d have to say I’m loving Epiciere thanks to Olivia! She got me hooked! Epicierie is home to the world’s best beneights (I haven’t been to cafĂ© du monde so their the best that I’ve tried thus far) and it also has a wide selection of fresh cheeses that they serve with bread and jams! Ahhhh it’s even. I swear I belong in Europe. I just love bread and cheese!! <3

If you had to live in one month forever which would it be and why? If I had to live in one month forever I’d pick December <3 I love the cold and sometimes we’re super lucky and it actually snows in Texas!! And Christmas time is my favorite time! I love all the glitter on the trees, the smell of cookies in the oven, all the crafting (I seriously own a mini hobby lobby in my room), and the spirit of the holidays! Everyone is always in the best mood and December is the best because it’s full of family and friends and I get to spend it in favorite places, Austin and Dallas <3 I could live in December forever!! Bring on the endless hot cocoa with whip cream and infinite snuggles and cuddles <3 <3

Spirit of The Week: Aly Kasberg

Name: Aly Kasberg
Hometown: New Braunfels, TX
Major: Public Relations
Weenie Class: Fall 10

What does being a Texas Spirit mean to you?
To me, being a Texas Spirit means to give: to the university, to the community and to each other. And while that all seems so selfless, the thing I’ve realized is that the more you give, the more you get in return. Being a Texas Spirit, I have gained friends, bridesmaids, mentors and mentees that have all shaped me as a person and given me thousands of memories.

Have any New Years Revolutions?
To record something that happens everyday! I really like to pretend I can make short videos – plus my friends always appreciate it when I shove a camera in their face.

What is one song you can't stop listening to right now?
Definitely Drunk In Love by Beyonce. I mean, did you see the Grammys?

What is something you will miss the most about Spirits after you graduate?
Ah, where do I start? The football games, the events, weenie dances – I’ll miss it all. But I think the thing I will miss most is what it feels like to walk into a group of Spirits. I know it’s cheesy, but I feel the most inspired, confident and happy when I am around these women and I honestly couldn’t imagine my college experience without them.

An Invitation to Our First Reception

To the women of The University of Texas:

Our university prides itself in creating leaders of the world and champions of change - an incredible feat when you think of the number of students who walk the 40 acres on a daily basis. With 50,000 students it is sometimes easy to get lost in the shuffle of everyday life and forget the reasons you were chosen to be a student at this university. You were chosen for a reason and you are here for a reason; that reason is to change the world and leave it a little bit better than when your journey first began. So today, I invite you to actively act on changing the world. I invite you to surround yourself with people who will inspire you to become the best version of yourself. I invite you to remember the reasons that you were chosen to be a part of UT. I invite you to apply to be a Texas Spirit.

Since becoming a part of this incredible tradition that has held firm to its four pillars of spirit, service, love and friendship for 73 years, I can undoubtedly say that I am on my way to becoming the woman that I had always hoped to be. Surrounded by 150 insanely amazing women who constantly inspire me to love more, learn more, and give more, I am pushing myself to places I never dreamed possible. Now, at this point you’re probably reading this and thinking, alright alright alright, Isabella, we get it, stop being so cheesy. For your sake, I will stop with the gooey stuff and give you some cold hard facts. Texas Spirits will give you an unforgettable college experience. Texas Spirits will inspire you to become a better person. Texas Spirits will change your life. Come find out how at our first reception, today, Wednesday, January 22nd at 5:00 p.m. in WCH 1.120.

Love and CIWY,
